Seminário Geral 20/08/2021: Quantum phases in moiré heterostructures

Sobre este evento

The electronic correlations which emerge from the interaction between electrons give rise to fascinating phenomena in many materials. The interplay between quantum phases such as high-Tc superconductivity, magnetism and the Mott transition,  at which a material expected to be a metal becomes an insulator, continuously offers new surprises.

The discovery in 2018 of superconductivity and insulating states in the so-called magic angle graphene, two graphene layers rotated by ~1º, opened a new avenue of research, the correlated states in moiré heterostructures, whose richness was beyond imagination.

In the talk, I will start briefly introducing the emergence of quantum phases in different correlated materials. Then I will give an overview of the new possibilities and states which have been discovered in magic angle graphene and other related engineered heterostructures. In the last part of the talk I discuss our work on the correlated states in one of these moiré heterostructures: the ABC trilayer graphene aligned with boron-nitride.
