Colóquio Extra 01/09/2022: LOW DOSE RATE BRACHYTHERAPY: RESEARCH ADVANCEMENTS IN GAMMATILE PERMANENT BRAIN IMPLANTS AND EYE PLAQUE BRACHYTHERAPY FOR INTRAOCULAR TUMORS

Sobre este evento

Brachytherapy has been used since 1903 in radiotherapy to treat cancer. Low dose rate brachytherapy uses radioactive sources implanted in or near the tumor. These sources stay implanted either permanently or temporarily in order to deliver the prescribed dose to the tumor. Two treatment modalities and respective research advancements will be discussed, GammaTile permanent brain implants and eye plaque temporary ocular implants. GammaTile uses Cesium-131 embedded in collagen tiles and has recently been developed for the treatment of brain tumors, including glioblastomas, meningiomas, and brain metastasis. Clinical aspects and dosimetry for GammaTile permanent brain implants will be presented. Eye plaques using Iodine-125 have been used since 1980’s as an alternative to eye enucleation to treat ocular melanomas. Currently, the side-
effects of this treatment include vision loss and blindness. A novel intra-ocular shield is proposed to prevent vision loss in eye plaque treated patients.
