What is the project “The Realm of the Galaxies”

“The Realm of the Galaxies” is a scientific outreach project, originally written in
Portuguese and financially supported by FAPEMIG (Fundação de Amparo
à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais). The project targets primarily high school students and
lay people in general, and aims to the production of essays about Extragalactic Astronomy.
The project covers the following topics:
I) what are galaxies – description of the formation, evolution and general
features of galaxies;
II) some galaxies – description of individual galaxies;
III) the structure of the universe – description of the hierarchical distribution of
galaxies in the universe;
IV) cosmology – description of the theoretical models of the universe, “The Realm
of the Galaxies”.
The project has 24 essays written in Portuguese (available at this
site) and in English.
